Board Welcomes New Superintendent Michael F. Plotkin

Dear Carmel Community,

It is with great enthusiasm that the Carmel Central School District Board of Education announces the appointment of Michael F. Plotkin, who will start as our new Superintendent of Schools on October 17.  After an extensive search, Mr. Plotkin emerged as the top candidate by demonstrating a proven track record of educational leadership, a commitment to student success and a real understanding of the Carmel Central School District’s needs.

Mr. Plotkin is a resident of Holmes. His three daughters are proud Carmel High School graduates, and his son currently attends Carmel High School. An educator for the past 30 years, Mr. Plotkin served as a teacher, principal, and a leader. He taught high school social studies in New York City and Chappaqua for more than a decade before taking on leadership positions. Most recently, he served as principal of Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School in Croton-on-Hudson.

The fact that Mr. Plotkin is no stranger to the Carmel community is a tremendous asset, Board of Education President Melissa Orser said.

“Mr. Plotkin brings with him many years of experience in education, but equally important he is one of our own,” Board President Orser said. “A longtime resident, involved community member and dedicated father, his deep roots in our community combined with his professional expertise give him a unique perspective and a genuine commitment to the success of every student in our district. His vision and path for the Carmel Central School District align closely with the board’s goals. We are confident that under his leadership, we will have stability, strength and a dedicated champion for our students, staff, and families.”

The Board’s September 16 vote on the appointment was unanimous.

Mr. Plotkin holds a School District Administrators Certificate from Teachers College, Columbia University as well as a Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts in history from City University of New York.

As Superintendent of the Carmel Central School District, Mr. Plotkin said he plans to be fully accessible, to dedicate himself to the service of the community and the children, and to remain laser-focused on what is best for the students.

“I am deeply familiar with the Carmel Central School District’s strengths and challenges,” he said. “I understand the importance of maintaining high academic standards, supporting social-emotional growth, and ensuring that all students are prepared for success in a rapidly changing world. I also recognize the need to build trust, foster unity, and celebrate the unique identity of Carmel’s schools.”

His start date is October 17.

Please join us in welcoming Carmel’s new Superintendent of Schools, Michael Plotkin.

Sincerely,

Carmel Central School District Board of Education

  • Standardized Testing and Our Commitment to Student Success

    Dear Carmel Families,

As we approach the upcoming standardized testing period for students in grades 3-8, I want to take a moment to reaffirm our collective commitment to the academic growth and success of all our students.

Standardized testing is a key component of our educational system, providing valuable insights into student learning, the effectiveness of instruction and overall school performance. The data from these assessments helps us tailor teaching strategies to better meet individual student needs and evaluate the strength of our districtwide curriculum.

We understand that standardized testing can bring a range of emotions for students, parents and educators alike. It is our shared responsibility to ensure that the testing experience is as positive and supportive as possible, in alignment with our goal of fostering a nurturing and effective learning environment.

To address concerns about potential stress or anxiety, our district has implemented strategies to create a calm and supportive atmosphere during the testing period. These strategies include clear communication with students about the purpose of the assessments, the provision of helpful resources and guidance on effective test-taking techniques. We encourage open and ongoing dialogue between parents, teachers and students to ensure that we approach the testing process together in a constructive and collaborative way.

Additionally, I would like to stress the importance of student participation in the testing process. The data we gather from these assessments not only highlights areas for growth but also plays a crucial role in maintaining and improving the academic standards of our district.

Thank you for your continued dedication to supporting quality education and fostering a positive learning environment within Carmel Central School District. If you have any questions or concerns about the testing process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s principal or the district office.

We truly appreciate your partnership in helping our students thrive.

    Respectfully,

    Erin Meehan-Fairben, Ed.D.
